Raoul Barrière Biography

The Grand Béziers coach has just left us. He was a champion once as a player and seven times as a coach. His imprint was colossal on French rugby, at the head of a club that played almost only with local guys.

Raoul Barrière Cause of Death

Raoul Barrière died Friday morning, in Béziers of course, five days after his 91st birthday. He left an immense mark in French rugby as a coach of Grand Béziers. He has led the club seven times at the top of French rugby. Thanks to him, the Biterrois raised the Brennus in 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1978 plus three Du-Manoir. Are we to realize that Barrière had lived seasons to zero defeats in all competitions (71-72 and 77-78)?

Raoul Barrière Carrer

Previously, he had been an excellent pillar, champion in 1961, international once against Romanian 1960. He had also participated in the legendary tour of the XV of France in South Africa in 1958.

His contribution to French rugby was colossal as a technician. He had made a champion group of France Reichel in 1968, a war machine formidable by its results, but also by its innovative style (and so unjustly criticized). Training teacher, Raoul Barrière was first an educator, a researcher, a man who had advanced his players as few would have done in his place.

Because at that time, the clubs did not recruit with the turn of arms. Barrière was champion with the players he had on hand. The vast majority was born within a radius of twenty kilometers around the stadium. Barrière had federated big personalities, he had created a kind of dynamic group where players were involved, even if it was not easy every day. But he could also rely on an outstanding captain Richard Astre.

A revolutionary gaming system

Barriere and his students had forged a revolutionary game system where front-runners crossed the front line first, often making small short passes inward. The notion of support was fundamental, it took precedence over the cult of the pretty pass where on the individual breakthrough. Then, three quarters took over to conclude by making speak their speed. He won his last title in 1978, the prettiest of all ways and then drew his bow at the beginning of the following season after an algebra with the second line Alain Estève, who embodied yet his greatest success as an educator.

But his career did not stop there, we saw him again at the controls of Valence, Millau and Narbonne at the end of the ’80s. We often forget him, he had nevertheless brought the audio club to the semi-finals from 1988 and 1989 and the victory in Du-manoir 90, with a less talented group than that of Béziers. He then made a move to Neuilly. But if we have to keep a single image of him, it will be the end of 1978 final when Béziers outclassed a very stubborn ASM until then. That day, Béziers touched the sun.
